Dr Riyam Mistry MBChB BSc(Hons) is working with Restore to investigate the effect of silicone gel sheeting in the treatment of scarring. He has previously researched scarring at the University of Bristol and as a scholar in the Harvard Division of Plastic Surgery. Riyam hopes to contribute to Restores efforts to help people suffering from the impact of scarring however needs participants for this study to reach this aim!
Scarring is a big problem worldwide and affects millions of people. Unfortunately, scars can be disfiguring, painful and can have a major negative impact on quality of life. Despite this, many treatments advertised don’t have the best evidence behind them.
Silicone gel sheeting has been used globally since the 1980’s to treat scarring on a relatively weak evidence base.

Dr Riyam Mistry and his team are conducting a world’s first study where they aim to provide high quality evidence for whether or not silicone gel sheeting works.
By participating in this study, you will be helping to provide answers and evidence on the treatment of scarring.
Participation involves having two small scratch wounds made over the skin on both hips so that they are hidden by underwear straps. Please refer to the image below of how the scratches look at 18 and 36 weeks.

You will need to be seen four times to take measurements at 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after the scratches have been made. All appointments will take place at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury, HP21 8AL. All the measurements are painless and take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
For your participation in the study, we will be offering £100 cash or bank payment.
